Bonobo LLC runs survice "ikasu," which upcycles antique kimonos that have fulfilled their roles as piece of clothes, to give them a new value as art pieces. In March 2024, ikasu won the Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Labor Bureau Director's Award at Japan Handmade of the Year 2024.

"We received commendations from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, acknowledging our activity in upcycling kimonos, symbols of Japanese traditional culture, into interior decor to create new value, proposing sustainable ways of using kimonos, and breathing new life into traditional industries."

ikasu perceives patterns, embroideries, weaves, etc., represented in kimonos, as artworks, and promotes upcycling them as interior decor. While respecting Japan's traditional clothing culture, it adapts to modern demands and trends. This service reconstructs kimonos to fit into new lifestyles and achieves sustainable lifestyles and cultural preservation by reusing materials in an environmentally friendly manner.

Japan Handmade of the Year is one of the most prestigious contests in Japan's handmade industry. The Tokyo Metropolitan Industrial Labor Bureau Director's Award is given to companies and organizations that have achieved outstanding results in industry and labor in Tokyo. ikasu's award this time was recognized for its innovation and social contribution.

ikasu revives the memories captured together with kimono in closets across Japan, transforming these kimonos into mixed media art, using wood, acrylic paint, washi paper, beaten gold, etc. Each kimono is precious and unique, so Lena Okamoto, an artist at ikasu with broad creative direction experience and knowledge of Japanese traditional culture, discusses the cutting points and designs with the customer, and delivers each piece as a meticulously crafted artwork.

The high-end artworks feature frames made from antique paulownia wood taken from chest-of-drawers for kimono - kiritansu, with designs meticulously crafted down to the smallest details, with order-made shape and size. ikasu can create pieces exceeding one meter in size, allowing you to enjoy the entire pattern and decoration of the kimono, which is rarely seen.

It is said that within Japanese households, a vast number of kimonos and obis are kept untouched. However, due to the lack of occasions to wear them, the challenges of maintenance, and the need for storage space, more families are disposing of these garments, preventing them from being passed on to the next generation. With the firm belief that kimonos and obis are not just garments but cherished memories of their owners, splendid works of kimono artists, and an integral part of Japan's proud traditional culture, ikasu is passionately engaged in creating artworks that breathe new life into these garments.

Kimonos are often referred to as the “wearable art" and are unique pieces of art created through traditional Japanese techniques. A team of artists, including an artist from an advertising company with kimono meister certification, a kimono expert who worked at a famous kimono store for many years, and a furniture craftsman who has produced many upcycled works, are making works by hand in Japan, valuing their beliefs and persistence.
